Ventura Yacht Club is a full-service facility located on the west side of Ventura Harbor between the Ventura Harbor Village and Channel Islands National Park Headquarters. Ventura Yacht Club maintains a lively Juniors' Program. In addition to the summer camp programs and a race team, Juniors' Sundays are offered monthly to all junior members.

The summer sailing programs offer a safe, educational, and fun environment. We want the kids to learn, and have a great time while doing so. Learning sailing skills is supplemented with fun activities such as sailing to the beach or park, having picnics, going on treasure hunts, playing boat-sponge tag, and having relay team competitions.

The goal of the program is to promote good overall seamanship through learning racing and sailing skills, water safety, and the Corinthian spirit, and to have a great time while doing so. While having fun, the kids will learn a wonderful sport that they can participate in for the rest of their lives. VYC maintains a quality fleet of Optimists, Sabots, Lazers, and FJs. All classes are taught by US Sailing certified instructors.

The summer classes have an average instructor-to-student ratio of 6:1, so the students receive the highest degree of attention and tailoring to their specific needs. The head instructors are US Sailing Certified, and are able to certify students through US Sailing. The program emphasizes a fun and safe learning environment. The goals of the instructors are to offer kids a safe class that is a fun, unique, and exciting way to spend time on the water, while teaching the students good sailing techniques and skills.

Forecast

Well, with cooler temperatures and early overcast skies, I wouldn’t have guessed what a perfect Juniors Day it would be on September 14th.  We had about 15 kids there and did some serious Sabot sailing.  Almost every boat had only one sailor, compared to past months when we had many more kids needing to double up with more experienced sailors.  All the hard work and participation during our summer program has really helped improve the overall skill level of our junior members.  Everything from rigging to boat handling went great.

Next month we will be putting on an informal regatta for the juniors.  I feel like this current crop of kids is ready for more racing.  So come early—we will have a chalk talk on the starting rules and basic racing rules as well as some tips on boat speed.

Some things you might want to consider bringing are:  sailing gloves, spray tops, and booties.  You always go faster in your boat when you’re more comfortable.

See you on October 12th!!
