Ventura Yacht Club is a full-service facility located on the west side of Ventura Harbor between the Ventura Harbor Village and Channel Islands National Park Headquarters. Ventura Yacht Club maintains a lively Juniors' Program. In addition to the summer camp programs and a race team, Juniors' Sundays are offered monthly to all junior members.

The summer sailing programs offer a safe, educational, and fun environment. We want the kids to learn, and have a great time while doing so. Learning sailing skills is supplemented with fun activities such as sailing to the beach or park, having picnics, going on treasure hunts, playing boat-sponge tag, and having relay team competitions.

The goal of the program is to promote good overall seamanship through learning racing and sailing skills, water safety, and the Corinthian spirit, and to have a great time while doing so. While having fun, the kids will learn a wonderful sport that they can participate in for the rest of their lives. VYC maintains a quality fleet of Optimists, Sabots, Lazers, and FJs. All classes are taught by US Sailing certified instructors.

The summer classes have an average instructor-to-student ratio of 6:1, so the students receive the highest degree of attention and tailoring to their specific needs. The head instructors are US Sailing Certified, and are able to certify students through US Sailing. The program emphasizes a fun and safe learning environment. The goals of the instructors are to offer kids a safe class that is a fun, unique, and exciting way to spend time on the water, while teaching the students good sailing techniques and skills.

Mid Winters

With recent storms and a rainy year so far, I wasn’t sure if going to the LAYC Mid-Winter Optimist Regatta was such a good idea (Shouldn’t we all go skiing??) but the forecast called for blue skies and nice breezes—and that’s what we got.  The weather was absolutely perfect.

Four of our VCY Race Team kids and families made the trek down to San Pedro for some great Optimist sailing.  All of our Race Team kids were sailing on the Championship course.  There were 8 races in total over the 2-day regatta.  Annika Fedde finished 3rd and Devin Nordeng in 4th in the White Fleet.  Jacob Maybe finished 4th and Spencer Kelley was 5th in Blue Fleet.

Are your kids or grandkids interested in racing Optimists??  Please contact Elke Fedde @ (805) 320-1218.  Our next Race Team event will be the Big Rock Regatta in Morro Bay on March 20-21.  Again, contact us if you are interested in joining the Race Team.

Our next Juniors’ Sunday Funday will be on March 14.  Fundays will be from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm this year.  Come early and have breakfast at the Club and sign up!!  See you down there.
