Ventura Yacht Club is a full-service facility located on the west side of Ventura Harbor between the Ventura Harbor Village and Channel Islands National Park Headquarters. Ventura Yacht Club maintains a lively Juniors' Program. In addition to the summer camp programs and a race team, Juniors' Sundays are offered monthly to all junior members.

The summer sailing programs offer a safe, educational, and fun environment. We want the kids to learn, and have a great time while doing so. Learning sailing skills is supplemented with fun activities such as sailing to the beach or park, having picnics, going on treasure hunts, playing boat-sponge tag, and having relay team competitions.

The goal of the program is to promote good overall seamanship through learning racing and sailing skills, water safety, and the Corinthian spirit, and to have a great time while doing so. While having fun, the kids will learn a wonderful sport that they can participate in for the rest of their lives. VYC maintains a quality fleet of Optimists, Sabots, Lazers, and FJs. All classes are taught by US Sailing certified instructors.

The summer classes have an average instructor-to-student ratio of 6:1, so the students receive the highest degree of attention and tailoring to their specific needs. The head instructors are US Sailing Certified, and are able to certify students through US Sailing. The program emphasizes a fun and safe learning environment. The goals of the instructors are to offer kids a safe class that is a fun, unique, and exciting way to spend time on the water, while teaching the students good sailing techniques and skills.

Big Rock Morrow Bay
Ventura Youth sailing Race Team participated in the 5th Regatta of the Southern California Opti Series on March 20-21 in Morro Bay.  The team was represented by 4 youth sailors.  Annika Fedde, Jacob Mabee, Spencer Nichols, and Devin Nordeng.    There were a total of 36 boats participating  in the Green (beginner fleet) and Champion fleet.  Sailors from San Francisco YC, Cabrillo Beach YC, Cal YC, VYC and Morro Bay YC were all present.
The Saturday event began with very light wind.  The Race committee was able to have 4 races completed on Saturday with Sunday brining equally light winds and a lot more current.  Two races were completed on Sunday.  Our sailors learned  what it is like to sail with more current than wind!  It was a great experience for all.  Morro Bay Yacht Club hosted a wonderful Sat. night dinner and provided a great location for sailing.
The 4 VYC sailors all participated in the Championship fleet.  There were a total of 26 boats in this class.  The final overall standing were: Jacob Mabee, 17th, Annika Fedde, 18th, Spencer Nichols, 23rd and Devin Nordeng, 26th place.  It was a great weekend!  Summer_Sailing_2009_Week_3/bigrock210.jpg

Spring Is Here Woo Hoo

Spring has sprung!  No sooner did we set the clocks back than wouldn’t you know it; we had an incredible spring sailing day for our first Sunday Funday of the year. I would like to go on and on about the perfect 5-to-10 knot breezes and how Katelyn and Jackie our instructors did such an awesome job.  I would like to rant and rave about how Laurie, Brian and Colin York have stepped up to help put on our Sundays.  Instead, I am going to try and clear up some information.

Yes-- our Sundays have started.  You can find the dates on the Yacht Club Website.  Our next Sunday Funday is on April 18 from 10am to 3pm.  Please note that we are starting at 10 now, so get down to the club a little early (or on time!) so we can start rigging right away. Last month, due to a scheduling conflict with Midwinter’s (regatta), our Sunday Funday didn’t take place--we will have to re-schedule, so stay tuned for more info on that. Also, our junior calendar year that used to run from January to December will now go from June 1 to May 31, so if you sign up now, your membership will go until June of 2011. We have changed the junior calendar year to simplify our summer sign ups. More information can be found at www.vycyouthsailing.org.

By the time you are reading this, our Opti Race Team will have been to Morro Bay for the “Big Rock Regatta.”  Check the website for our posted results.

Norris Leap, our Cruise Chair on our last yacht club cruise, arranged a tour of the Bill Of Rights down in Channel Islands Harbor last month  I quickly realized we needed to put together a Juniors trip/event on such a grand tall ship. So, I called our resident tall ship expert and former Juniors Chairman John Sudgen who graciously agreed to help us get something going with the Bill Of Rights.  So if anyone is interested in getting involved. Please e-mail us at vycyouthsailing@gmail.com or just watch for some up-coming info on that. Their e- mail is www.americantallship.org if you can’t wait.

On April 17&18 some of us will be going to the Harken#2 Regatta at SFYC and will miss our Sunday Funday. Looking further out on May 1&2 we have a camp-out regatta in Lake Piru with Lasers and Opties.  Check out www.sfvyc.us  for info. We will be racing again on May 22&23 for the Harken #3 at CBYC. Again, check our website for info. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions (805) 641-3126 or if you have race team/regatta questions call Elke at (805) 320-1218.

See you on the water!
