      Ventura Yacht Club is a full-service facility located on the west side of Ventura Harbor between the Ventura Harbor Village and Channel Islands National Park Headquarters. Ventura Yacht Club maintains a lively Juniors' Program. In addition to the summer camp programs and a race team, Juniors' Sundays are offered monthly to all junior members.

      The summer sailing programs offer a safe, educational, and fun environment. We want the kids to learn, and have a great time while doing so. Learning sailing skills is supplemented with fun activities such as sailing to the beach or park, having picnics, going on treasure hunts, playing boat-sponge tag, and having relay team competitions.

      The goal of the program is to promote good overall seamanship through learning racing and sailing skills, water safety, and the Corinthian spirit, and to have a great time while doing so. While having fun, the kids will learn a wonderful sport that they can participate in for the rest of their lives. VYC maintains a quality fleet of Optimists, Sabots, Lazers, and FJs. All classes are taught by US Sailing certified instructors.

The summer classes have an average instructor-to-student ratio of 6:1, so the students receive the highest degree of attention and tailoring to their specific needs. The head instructors are US Sailing Certified, and are able to certify students through US Sailing. The program emphasizes a fun and safe learning environment. The goals of the instructors are to offer kids a safe class that is a fun, unique, and exciting way to spend time on the water, while teaching the students good sailing techniques and skills.

Also our Little Wet Wednesdays will begin in June. Please read the following;

           The Youth Sailing Program is looking for anyone interested in participating in the Youth Wet Wednesday Series.  This will begin on June 23 and will continue every Wednesday until August 18th.  We will be racing Opti's and FJ's.  Boats need to be rigged and ready to leave the dock by 5:30.  Races will run until 7:00.  We are encouraging all participants to stay afterwards and enjoy dinner at the club that evening.

If you are interested, please contact Elke Fedde, 320-1218 to reserve your boat.  The cost for this series is $90.00 and the racer must be a Junior VYC Member.  If you are sailing a FJ, please arrange for your own crew.  Remember, all sailors must wear close toed shoes and have a PFD.  We welcome other youth sailors from other Yacht Clubs too!  Come join the fun! Again we are adding an FJ class this year so please let us knows if you are interested in racing one of the club boats.

Opti News from around the world including California?

Excerpt from today’s Scuttlebutt . . .

* From Doug Weitz:
Regarding the coverage of the U.S. Optimist Team Trials in Scuttlebutt 3086,
I thought you might find the following facts interesting about this year’s
event:
1. 14% of the 185 competitors were from California.
2. 27% of the top 15 finishers were from California.
3. 20% of the top 50 finishers were from California.

I believe these are all records for us and certainly affirm the West Coast’s
assimilation into the Class. Not to sound like Billy Mays, but there is
more. We have two permanent USODA Regional Championship events on the West
Coast: the WCC, which is hosted annually at Southern California venues and
another, the PCC, which is hosted at Northern California/Washington/Oregon
venues. This year’s PCC will be hosted by Seattle YC at the Gorge August
14-15 and the WCC will be hosted by CalYC September 11-12.

Of course, we were quite fortunate to have had the U.S. Optimist Nationals
hosted by CBYC last year. In addition, we now boast a significant amount of
local events, including the four regatta Harken Series (CYC, CBYC, SFYC,
St.FYC) and the five regatta SoCal Series (SBYC, VYC, CBYC, LAYC, MDYC).
And, Santa Barbara YC will be hosting the Opti’s for the first time ever in
a SoCal Junior Olympic Festival July 15-18.

Not bad for the land of fruit & nuts (and Sabots).

PS – More Opti News . . .

To quote Russell Coutts from yesterday’s America’s Cup 34 press conference . . . “I mean, imagine the situation you had in the past, where you had an America’s Cup race, the premiere event in the sport, and the racing was called off because there was too much wind.  A crazy situation where Optimist sailors were racing ashore, but the America’s Cup racing was called off for the day.  We can’t afford to have that in the modern era . . . “

I guess this means the AC boats won’t be racing at the Gorge in August!!
